Amelia Project. International research project for the excavation of the Pantanelli necropolis (Amelia – TR).

Brief description and research objectives:

The project involves the excavation of the Pantanelli necropolis conducted by a team of Italian archaeologists from the University of Tuscia and archaeologists from China’s leading archaeological museums, such as the Hubei Provincial Museum (the Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology Research), Nanjing Museum and the Shaanxi History Museum.

Beginning with the study of the artifacts found in the excavation campaigns conducted at the site by the Superintendency, the project will involve a series of activities prior to excavation. First, extensive geophysical prospecting will be carried out over the entire area to pinpoint the areas to be subjected to direct archaeological investigation. Preliminary archaeological activities will also include surface reconnaissance and study of available aerophotographic archives. Once this phase is completed, field activities will be initiated, which will also include simultaneous study of the finds and post-excavation restoration work.

Possible collaborating bodies and institutions: Project in agreement with the Municipality of Amelia, the China Italy Museum League and the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio per l’Umbria.

Type of Funding and Call:

The project is funded until 2025 by the Chinese government authority (amount of funding: 393,500 euros per year).
