ABSTRACT
The main objective of the DIVERFARMING project is to identify innovative solutions to improve the resilience of European agricultural and agri-food systems looking at long-term economic and environmental sustainability.
The project activities are shared and validated by an integrated partnership that involves researchers, farmers, technicians of agro-food industries, SMEs in logistics and production of agricultural machinery. The aim is to respond to the needs, solve the problems and seize the opportunities of sustainable agriculture by defining agro-ecological transition models suitable for several European agri-food systems.
DIVERFARMING aims to customize and test diversified farming systems in order to increase their diffusion and limit the impacts arising from the current management of natural resources, especially soil, from the production and processing of goods and agri-food products.
To overcome the cultural, technical and economic-financial barriers DIVERFARMING has activated a system of knowledge sharing and co-definition of best practices based on communities of practice extended to farmers, agro-food industries, researchers, policy makers and consumers for each context of investigation.
Through the management of 21 case studies will be evaluated the benefits related to the introduction of good cultivation practices such as input minimization, associations and rotations, and management of supply chain relationships, in 6 distinct European soil and climate macro-regions.
The selected cases concern different crops and supply chains, observing impacts and benefits related to the adoption of different cropping patterns with respect to the production and marketing of fruits and vegetables, the management of arable land for the production of wheat or fodder and feed for the dairy industry.
