Responsible: Prof. Barbara Giovanna Bello
The E-Lab “Equality in Theory and Action” aims to delve into the theoretical and practical aspects of equality, differences, and inequalities, with a focus on various social contexts and legal systems from a law-in-action perspective. Students will have the opportunity to engage in discussions, in English, with peers, faculty members, and experts from different universities, enhancing their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical issues and to develop legal arguments “in context.” Following an introductory lecture on theories of equality and key concepts of the program (e.g., intersectionality) directed at Unitus students, the course will offer the opportunity to discuss current issues related to the protection of equality in its formal and substantive dimensions. The lab will conclude with a session for Unitus students, in which the main topics discussed will be revisited, and an evaluation test will be administered.
In the first semester of 2024/2025, the lab will take place every Thursday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, from October 3 to November 28, 2024, for a total of 9 sessions (18 hours). Students who regularly attend the lab and pass the final test will earn 6 ECTS credits.
The initiative, which will be conducted entirely online, is part of the international Comparative Equality Law program, promoted by the University of California, Berkeley (USA), and the Portsmouth Law School (UK) since the 2021/2022 academic year, as a long-term follow-up to the first international course “COVID-19 and Global Inequalities,” organized during the pandemic in the 2020/2021 academic year. In addition to the two proposing universities, the 2024/2025 edition will include the participation of: Université Paris I – Pantheon Sorbonne (Paris, France); Pepperdine University (USA); University of Illinois (USA); Nova University Lisbon (Portugal); Yașar University (Turkey); University of Palermo (Italy); Université Libre Bruxelles (Belgium); Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú; University of Wroclaw (Poland); University of Buenos Aires (Argentina); Università della Tuscia (Viterbo, Italy).
