Unitus coordinates GREENO2 project

The kick-off meeting of the international project called GREENO2 “Green Roofs in higher education institutions as sustainable cEnters for research, participation, ENvironmental consciousness and O2 generation” took place at the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences, in Athens, Greece. GREENO2 co-financed by the European Union Erasmus+ Programme (Poject number 2023-1-IT02-KA220-HED-000156281). The partnership brought together representatives from Italy, Greece, Poland, Romania, Spain and Ukraine. The project coordinator Prof. Andrea Colantoni presented the main stages for the implementation of GREENO2 which include, in particular:
– The promotion of vertical and horizontal green solutions as the academic community’s response to environmental protection, active participation and well-being in higher education;
– An online education activity, aimed at environmental awareness through the practice of “green roofs” and solutions;
– Encourage the creation of green roofs as places for learning, research and environmental awareness.
The European project aims to promote the practice of green roofs as places for research, participation and environmental awareness in higher education institutions, encouraging training dedicated for university staff and students. Higher education institutions play a key role in promoting sustainable development and addressing social and climate change challenges that represent a main concern in all institutional decision-making processes.

GREENO2 is in line with the recent European communication on the Green Deal, the European strategy to respond to global environmental and economic challenges and achieve the ambitious goal of climate neutrality by 2050. This strategy recognizes a priority importance for universities in involving workers, students and the wider community and in promoting the adoption of policies aimed at promoting sustainable technological innovations such as those represented by the use of vertical green solutions that help restore biodiversity in cities.
The multidisciplinary partnership includes 5 universities (in Italy, Greece, Poland, Spain and Ukraine) 1 non-profit organization (in Greece) and 2 companies (in Romania and Italy).

Project duration: 36 months – from 01 September 2023 to 31 August 2026
