ABSTRACT
The general objective of the SeaForest Life project is to increase the capacity of the carbon reservoirs of Posidonia oceanica meadows, through actions of reduction of boat anchoring degradation on the habitat 1120*, a priority habitat under the Habitats Directive (Dir 92/43 / EEC), considered as one of the most productive ecosystems of the Mediterranean basin.
In particular, the project involves the quantification of carbon deposits of Posidonia oceanica and their rate of change related to habitat degradation with particular reference to the effects caused by anchoring and mooring of pleasure boats.
SeaForest Life is implemented in the Maddalena Archipelago National Park, the Asinara National Park and the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, for which ad hoc mooring management plans will be adopted to reduce this practice on the meadows.
In a second time the SeaForest LIFE model will be exported to Malta. It will also be realized a market for voluntary trading of carbon credits specifically generated by the activities of the SeaForest LIFE project, thanks to a national IT platform that will be subsequently extended to all Mediterranean countries.
