The PhD course in Sciences, Technologies and Biotechnologies for Sustainability aims to provide the necessary skills to carry out highly qualified research activities, including those of an interdisciplinary nature, at universities, public or private bodies, Italian or foreign in the sectors:
1. of agri-food production;
2. of environmental technologies and forest ecology;
3. of biological systems/bioindustries
This Doctorate course is aimed at Italian, European, and international students interested in training as researchers, technologists, and designers in the scientific and industrial sector of sustainability sciences, technologies, and biotechnologies. This doctorate is the ideal continuation of university studies undertaken in various areas, particularly technical-scientific ones. The specialization of the PhD takes place through the carrying out of original research work on a specific topic.
The DR course aims to provide the skills necessary to carry out highly qualified research activities at universities, public or private bodies, Italian or foreign, including those of an interdisciplinary nature, relating to innovation in the food, organic and forestry sectors.
The AgriFood curriculum addresses studies and research on the fundamental and applied aspects of food transformation, conservation, and evaluation, as well as the criteria for managing product quality and the environmental sustainability of processes. The teaching activity also takes place in the context of collaborations foreseen by the annual Workshop on the Developments in the Italian PhD Research in Food Science and Technology and by the Memorandum of Understanding of the National Network of Research Doctorate Courses in Food Science Technology and Biotechnology.
The Forest Ecology and Environmental Technologies curriculum is activated, from time to time, in research areas relating to the structure, functionality, stability and productivity of forest ecosystems, including the soil system, the ecological and productive recovery of ecosystems and recolonization forestry, to the protection of biological diversity at a genetic, specific and structural-territorial level. It also addresses the issues of global changes and the related dynamics of mitigation and adaptation of forest ecosystems and, in general, of natural terrestrial ecosystems.
The Biological Systems/Bioindustries curriculum addresses research on basic and applied biology to animal, plant and microbial systems; and on biotechnology for bioremediation and human health. The curriculum is also characterized by research on the sustainable agronomic management of Mediterranean cultivation systems, on plant-soil relationships and on the improvement of the productivity and quality of cultivated plants, as well as on the so-called white-, green- and red biotechnologies.
In its declination, the PhD course in Science, Technology and Biotechnology for Sustainability is fully consistent with the PNRR objectives and therefore with the main lines of development and strategic growth of our country. With its educational and training objectives and its 3 curricula, it fully falls within the priorities and objectives of the PNRR, first of all Education and Research, having in its objectives specifically ‘The strengthening of the educational system, digital and technical-scientific skills, research and technology transfer’. Furthermore, with its 3 curricula, it fully addresses the issues relating to the Green Revolution and Ecological Transition, addressing the topic in agro-industrial systems, natural and forestry environments, and offering research and biotechnological solutions for economic and ecological sustainability. Finally, thanks to the support of the MUR excellence project “LANDSCAPE 4.0: environmental quality, value of natural and cultural capital, food excellence”, which concluded in 2022, it has achieved a strong convergence between the fields of environmental, technological and cultural research and the digital transition and management of large amounts of data (big data), also by establishing a highly powerful IT and processing hub capable of managing large amounts of heterogeneous data.
Furthermore, in its intrinsic multidisciplinarity, this DR course favours transversal interactions between disciplines and a significant opportunity for growth along strategic training paths.
The course has the sole and common objective of training researchers and research managers with skills in planning, financing and managing research and monitoring activities at public and private bodies and institutions operating in the agri-food and nutraceutical sectors, environmental and sustainable forestry, biotechnological, pharmaceutical, capable of dealing with the production, patenting and use of innovative bio-products that respond to the logic of environmental sustainability. Among the professional opportunities are certainly those in Italian and international research institutions and universities; and managerial positions in the sector of innovation, technology transfer, and product quality in private Italian and European companies. Management positions in public bodies, ministries, and regional and Italian government agencies. Management positions within European and EC Agencies. Possibility of carrying out specialist consultancy activities in the field of sustainability applied to the environment, agriculture, forests, production and quality in the biotechnological and agro-industrial sectors.
The selection of candidates is made based on DR 226 of 14 December 2022 and the internal regulation UNITUS D.R. n. 723/13 of 07.17.2013, modified with D.R. n. 491/18 of 06.19.2018, modified with D.R. n. 101/22 of 01.03.2022.
Each candidate must identify in the application the CV and the position to which they wish to apply and must prepare a research project consistent with the topics that are indicated annually in the announcement phase. The project essentially serves to evaluate the candidate’s cultural background and aptitude for research. The project is presented during an oral interview in front of the examining commission and will represent an important evaluation yardstick.
